Guillain-Barre syndrome is an immunologically mediated disorder. Although the prognosis is usually good, and effective treatment is needed to reduce the mortality, length of hospital stay, maximum functional deficit, and risk of residual disability.
The authors have experienced that 16 patients suffering from Guillain-Barre syndrome were treated with plasma exchange.
In 16 patients with a total 74 plasma exchange procedures, all patients resulted in beneficial effect of clinical improvement.
The effect usually appeared after 2-3 procedures of plasma exchange. The results suggest that plasma exchange may have a role in the treatment of Guillain-Barre syndrome.
